Last year, Reliance Jio had announced a major infusion of capital with Google investing Rs 33,737 crore for a 7.7 percent stake in the company. They also announced that they will be collaborating in the production of an affordable Android smartphone. Qualcomm is now being reported to be involved in providing hardware necessary for this upcoming entry-level smartphone. Jio is trying to convert its exclusive users into regular users with entry-level smartphones.
Rajen Vagadia, President of Qualcomm India, is optimistic that Qualcomm and Jio will continue to collaborate and compete with each other in bringing new technology to the market. The 400-series chipsets will probably be used in the new budget smartphones for 4G as well as 5G. But the company has confirmed that such arrangements have been reached, but the details are confidential.
Reports had previously indicated that, in December of 2020, Reliance Jio would launch a budget smartphone made in collaboration with Google. However, the release date has been pushed back and is now expected to occur prior to the end of 2018. The upcoming budget smartphone will be priced around $55 to provide an entry-level smartphone to attract the masses. A second report claims that the Jio’s market share will decline and it will be challenging to maintain its lead in the market.
The upcoming Jio-Google budget smartphone will be interesting to observe in the market. Google is attempting to focus on offering budget phone offerings by offering Android Go and Android One, but has been unable to offer consistent support for a few months. The Indian smartphone market is already very competitive, and whether or not Reliance Jio’s smartphones can be a threat to Xiaomi and Realme is unknown.
