Airtel is now 5G ready, demonstrating live 5G services in India
At a digital press conference on Thursday, Bharti Airtel announced that it had become the first telecom operator in India to successfully demonstrate and orchestrate live 5G service over a commercial network in Hyderabad. Earlier, Reliance Jio announced that it was testing 5G in India. The operators have yet to reveal the official rollout timeline. As per the official press release, the telecommunications operator announced that it “did this through the NSA (Non Stand Alone) network technology over its existing liberalized spectrum in the 1800 MHz band.”
The telecom operator further highlighted that Airtel seamlessly operated 5G and 4G simultaneously within the same spectrum block using a first of its kind, dynamic spectrum sharing. The 5G readiness of Airtel’s network across all domains has been emphatically validated by this demonstration: Radio, Core and Transport. In comparison to existing technologies, the company claims that Bharti Airtel 5G connectivity is capable of delivering 10x speeds, 10x latency and 100x competitiveness. The operator claims that users were able to download a full-length film on a 5G phone in a matter of seconds in Hyderabad.
Furthermore, the telecom operator revealed that when adequate spectrum is available and government approvals will received, the full impact of the 5G experience will be available to our customers. Gopal Vittal, MD & CEO, Bharti Airtel, commenting on the 5G demonstration, said that I am very proud of our engineers who have worked tirelessly in today’s Tech City, Hyderabad to showcase this incredible capability. As this game changing test in Hyderabad proves, every one of our investments is future-proofed. We have shown once again that we have always been the first in India to pioneer new technologies in our quest to empower Indians everywhere, with Airtel being the first operator to demonstrate this capability.
Vittal further added. “We believe that India has the potential to become a global hub for 5G innovation, We need the eco system to come together to make that happen – applications, devices and innovation in the network. We are more than ready to get our bit done.
